Design notes
Weight estimates matter for drones, wearables and other products with a tight mass budget. The copper figure is also useful for estimating material cost in volume production.
Ways to reduce board weight:
• Shrink the board outline (weight scales with area)
• Use a thinner stack-up (0.8 mm instead of 1.6 mm)
• Keep the layer count and copper weight to the minimum
Copper density is about 8.95 g/cm³ and FR-4 is about 1.8 to 2.0 g/cm³, which varies between board manufacturers.
